Tom Andrews takes a listen to the Columbian pop princesses fresh new release.

After the success of her rebellious debut EP entitled, “Jesus Made Me Bad“, Lao Ra has returned with a brand new track. Originally her own mother was worried that her music may offend her local community due to its lyrical content which follows Lao as she becomes a good girl gone bad. But challenging social conventions isn’t always a bad thing, especially in Lao Ra‘s case.

Drum Machine begins with bouncy synths which are complimented by a single woodblock in the background. This simple approach to the production is more than effective here, creating a little slice of heaven.  The lyrics are sonically synchronised against the summery track with the ever so catchy hook, “I drum to the beat of my own machine”, being repeated. This lyric reflects the ideologies behind challenging social normalities, reflecting Lao‘s independence, also reflecting on her past she sings, “I still remember who I was, a little girl without a chance”, an allusion to the fact that she grew up in the heavily Catholic city of Bogotá, Columbia during its war on drugs which seems to have heavily influenced her material and attitudes.  This track works to re-establish Lao Ra and remind us there’s a lot more to come from this good girl gone bad.
